The #BlackLivesMatter movement explained... I recently had a very enlightening, and insightful conversation on Facebook, in the comments on one of my friend’s posts, about BLM. So I thought that this was a great teachable moment for those who may have strong, negative feelings about #BLM. This is 100% my opinion, and I am 100% open to hearing your thoughts and feedback on this. Sidebar: I hosted my monthly Anti-Racism School Is In Session™️ webinar this morning (thank you to everyone who signed up), and I am always very drained after teaching these webinars. So I wouldn’t normally post something like this on the same day, because my energy is very depleted right now. But I feel like it needs to be said, so here goes.. There are 3 groups of people involved in the Black Lives Matter movement: 1.The Organization. This includes the Founders of Black Lives Matter, their employees, those who fund the organization, and those who are directly, or indirectly affiliated with the organization in some way. 2.The Movement. The movement that was initially started by the Founders, has taken on a life of its own, and very much so exists outside of the confines of the organization itself. The movement simply stands for the equal value, equal respect, and equal treatment of black lives. Not ABOVE anyone, not because black lives are MORE valuable than anyone else’s; but rather because we continue to receive unequal treatment, access, opportunities, and respect, in our society. Again, this is about valuing the lives of black people equally, as everyone else. Got it? 3.The Opportunists. These are people who have tried to hijack the movement and make it about something that it’s not; Violence. Remember, “Black Lives Matter” is a statement that anyone can say, at anytime, doing anything. So if someone wants to incite violence into an otherwise peaceful protest, all they have to do is spray paint “BLM” on a building, after they throw a brick in the window, breaking the glass of a small business, or scream “BLM” while they are ramming their car through a crowd of peaceful protesters. No one controls what people use the term, or how they choose to use it. Any questions?
